Kumalo is an elderly Zulu priest who has spent all of his life in the village of Ndotsheni. He is a quiet, humble, and gentle man with a strong moral sense and an abiding faith in God.

Paton was born in Pietermaritzburg, in the province of Natal, on January 11, He entered Natal University College ingraduating with a B. He became a teacher, employed in schools for well-off white students.

But in he became seriously ill with enteric fever, which gave him time to reflect on the direction of his life.
